The beginning of the school year is always hectic. September, for us, means we kick off our Service Learning program. Service Learning is a part of the curriculum at Odyssey School. Our students are encouraged to give back to the community, and we do so on a monthly basis as a learning community. Students, staff, and teachers leave campus on the last Friday of each month to visit organizations such as Capital Area Food Bank, Meals on Wheels, and Austin Animal Shelter to help those organizations fulfil their missions. These experiential learning activities have positive and long-lasting effects on those who participate. Just as Odyssey School is thankful for those who volunteer with us and donate to us, the other organizations Odyssey works with are also extremely grateful for our service. It’s a win-win.
Also, we enjoyed our annual Meet Odyssey Open House event on September 10! We had so much fun, music, and food! Local favorite, Bruce Smith of The Bruce Smith Band, entertained our crowd with some Americana tunes! Guests toured our campus, met teachers and current students, learned about our curriculum, saw our Maker Lab, and visited with the Head of School. Each year we have new students enroll who are in need of a non-traditional learning environment. Our teachers are trained in supporting, educating, and guiding students who struggle in traditional learning environments and students who need extra support, small classes, and an empathetic teacher. We offer our students an accepting and safe place to build confidence, and we offer challenging academics, such as AP courses, Spanish I & II, and upper-level math courses. Some electives we have offered in the past are: Culinary Arts, Intro to Marketing, Technology, and Maker Lab. If you missed our Open House, we can still give you a private tour of the school.
